Floating Trash Skimmer Reduces Plastic Pollution
The Seabin is a floating trash skimmer that pumps debris and plastic from the water's surface, passing it through a catch bag, retaining the pollutants and releasing the water. The pump sends the water back and any trash or debris is retained inside the catch bag. This debris and trash is emptied from the floating trash skimmer as its catch bag becomes full. The amount of emptying that any Seabin will need depends on the amount of debris in the water, the water conditions, and other site conditions.
There are three different types of Seabin floating trash skimmers: mobile, fixed, and floating. Mobile and fixed Seabins can be moored to fixed docks and moved to other fixed docks. Floating trash collector Seabins can be affixed to floating docks.
Seabin Debris Capabilities
- Catch Bag Capacity: 44 pounds (20 kilograms)
- Average Collected Per Day: 8 pounds (3.9 kilograms)
- Average Collected Per Year: 1.4 tons
Most Commonly Caught Items
- Fishing Gear
- Cigarette Butts
- Food Wrappers
- Polystyrene Foam
Seabin floating trash skimmers are adept at catching microplastics and microfibers in its catch bag. Maintaining a Seabin requires a dedicated person or group of people to empty the floating trash collector as it gets full, and to perform routine maintenance checks on the Seabin, by cleaning it and checking it. As debris flows from storm drains and enters marine environments, cleaning up the pollution requires proven tools, such as the Seabin.
Seabin Is a Plastic Pollution Solution
Seabin floating trash collectors have a variety of benefits, and are a viable plastic pollution solution. Seabins reduce the amount of plastic pollution that enters the open ocean through stormwater drains, marinas, and harbors. They do this through their pump and catch bag mechanics of taking in polluted water and sending out water free of trash and debris.

Seabins feature a power source, a pump, bin, bracket attachment, and catch bag. Different types of Seabins will have different construction features. For instance, the fixed Seabins have floating pontoons and mobile Seabins have modular docks made with high density polyethylene. Overall, the technical specs for the pump, bin, and catch bag are standard for each type of Seabin. With their sturdy construction and marine grade components, Seabins are proven and effective marine debris solutions.

Seabins can be used in a variety of applications. They are effective at controlling the effects of plastic pollution that occurs from stormwater drains, emptying into marinas and harbors and flowing into the ocean. The Seabin's catch bag can retain microplastics as small as 2 millimeters. Seabins can be used by stormwater departments for plastic pollution solutions in retention ponds and lagoons. Private parks with calm bodies of water can also benefit from using a Seabin to control the buildup of marine debris and trash.
Seabins Are Used By:
- Stormwater Departments
- High Schools and Colleges
- Waterside Restaurants and Businesses
- Environmental Learning Centers
- Homeowners' Associations
- Marinas and Yacht Club
Seabins are a great educational and awareness tool. Environmental learning centers, high schools, colleges, and other educational organizations that spend time and money working with community-wide projects and fundraisers could find their next project with a Seabin. Whether used to clean up a polluted body of water, mobilize a community, or supplement a school's curriculum with more awareness about plastic pollution solutions, a Seabin has a variety of applications and real-world implications.
