Coir Mats for Stream Restoration

Erosion Control Mat for Stream Restoration Projects

Question: Hello! I have a question about Coir Mats for a stream bank restoration project my company is working on. I need a quote for coir erosion control mat 70. I am beginning a project in in Raleigh, North Carolina, and need approximately 543 yards² total or erosion control mat. The stream bank is 188 feet long and I need to mat both sides of the stream - 13 feet is the maximum width. What is the difference between this mat and other coir mats?

Answer: Our GEI Works team is more than happy to help! Coir Mats are an excellent solution for erosion control, especially for a stream restoration project like the one you've described. The coconut fiber, used in our coir erosion control mats, is a 100% natural product and is fully biodegradable. Coir erosion control mats, once placed in on the stream bank, will biodegrade and provide rich nutrients to the existing soil, encouraging deep roots, growth, and vegetation development. This ensures that the stream restoration project continues to succeed long after the coir mat has disappeared.

The Coir Erosion Control Mat 70 has openings of 0.5in. x 0.5in. in the blanket and a weight of 780 g/m². This semi-permanent erosion control mat generally lasts from between 4-6 years and is available in four roll sizes. 30 SY/roll, 120 SY/roll, and 180 SY/roll.

Coir Erosion Control Mat Variety

coir matGEI Works offers coir erosion control mats that differ in strength and weave opening; the wider the weave, the easier it is to plant seeds in the soil below. Smaller weaves provide more strength and support while protecting the area in a stream restoration project. Additionally, the stronger mats are capable of maintaining riverbank restoration projects handling increased flows and steepness.

When choosing the right coir mats for a stream restoration project, take into consideration the flow on site, as well as the steepness of the bank.

The following can be used as a general guideline for choosing between these coir mats for stream bank restoration:

  • Coir Mat 40: Can be used on 2:1 slopes and in areas with a flow up to 8 fps.
  • Coir Mat 60: Can be used on 2:1 slopes and in areas with a flow up to 10 fps.
  • Coir Mat 70: Can be used on slopes up to 1:1 and in areas with a flow up to 12 fps.
  • Coir Mat 90: Can be used on slopes up to 1:1 and in areas with a flow up to 16 fps.
