Choosing a Coir Erosion Control Mat

coir mat 70In order to pick the right erosion control mat for your location, we urge customers to consider a couple of different factors including the following:

  • Steepness of your Slope: The steeper your slope, the higher the strength you will want to use for your mat. As a frame of reference, the Coir Mat 40 is typically used for lower level areas (slopes 3:1 or lower) while the Coir Mat 90 is designed for steep areas (up to 1:1). If your slope is particularly steep, having a higher strength mat (Coir Mat 70 or 90) can be essential to effective use.

  • Flow Rate of Water in your Area: In addition to slope steepness, you will also want to consider the flow rate of the water in the location. The faster the water is flowing, the higher the strength of the mat should be. Flow rates among our strongest mats are typically up to 16 fps.

  • Planting: As a secondary factor, if you are planning on planting vegetation in your area, you will want to make sure that the weave openings in your mat are big enough for these plants to grow through.
