coir blocksThe GEI Works' coir blocks are a biodegradable erosion control solution designed to help retain sediment and prevent erosion. Constructed entirely from natural, biodegradable coir coconut fiber, each block features a main bulk section and two layers of fabric (one bottom layer and one top layer). This design ensures a reliable system that can support vegetative growth and help prevent erosion in environmentally sensitive areas such as rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands, and other coastlines.

Design of the erosion control coir blocks features an interior block system that is either 12 inches or 16 inches tall and made from densely packed mattress coir. Blocks are 10 feet in length and form a solid layer or row of support. Each block is then wrapped in a layer of woven coir fabric. Fabric is designed to cover 3 sides of the block, leaving the back end open for soil or dirt. This combination of strength and stability provides a consistent height on slopes, hills, banks, inlets or soil lifts.

coir blocksWhen using these blocks, multiple units are placed together to create one long block that is able to stretch along the entire shoreline, slope, or riverbank. When connecting the blocks, each unit typically features a male side and a female side. To connect the blocks, the male side of one coir block can be connected to the female side of the adjacent coir block. This setup is repeated throughout the entire length of the erosion control project site.

For increased connection and stabilization, extended coir block fabric can be placed on top of the blocks to create a long, stable structure. This setup also helps to provide a consistent layer of height for soil lifts.
