Coastal Erosion Causes and Solutions
Control Shoreline Decay with Erosion Control Products
Coastal Erosion is the process of land loss and the removal of sediment from coastal regions and shorelines because of waves, tides, and currents. Coastal erosion is a natural occurrence on exposed and sheltered coasts alike. Currents, waves, and sea level changes directly affect erosion on the coast. While we as humans can contribute to the problem, we also can do our part to prevent it and restore our shorelines through the control of coastal erosion with helpful erosion control product solutions.

Main Causes of Coastline Erosion
- Longshore Drift: Sediments are transported along a coast at an angle to the shoreline. This occurs most frequently in the surf zone.
- Attrition: Waves cause loose pieces of rock debris (scree) to collide causing corrasion or abrasion (like sandpaper).
- Corrasion: Waves break on the shore or cliff face, which slowly erodes it.
- Corrosion: The sea's pH levels can directly affect erosion. If the level is below 7.0, erosion is more likely to occur.
- Hydraulic Action: Wave strike a shore or cliff face and compresses air into the cracks. The air then exerts pressure causing splintering and further cracking.
Shoreline Erosion Control Solutions
As we consider shoreline erosion control solutions, it becomes difficult to know which one is best. Beach Restoration is simple but expensive and only temporary. It can leave a footprint where the new sand is harvested. Seawalls and jetties create larger waves and disrupts along-coast currents. There are solutions that are more permanent and better for the environment. Coir is natural coconut fiber and protects the soil while plant roots and shoots colonize and stabilize. Coir comes in mat, block, log, and wattle form and provide a semi-permanent and natural solution for erosion.
Geotextiles are permeable and impermeable engineered fabrics that provide a permanent solution for erosion. When used with soil and rock, they can separate two soil types, filter water, and reinforce the ground. To Learn more, visit our woven geotextile and nonwoven fabric web pages.

Coastal and Shoreline Erosion Control Product Solutions
Some of the most commonly used shoreline erosion control products in coastal areas and along cliffs have included geotextiles, breakwater geotexile tubes, and natural coir products. Read more below about the different types of coastal erosion control available.
Geotextiles for Shoreline Erosion Control
For many coastal erosion control applications, the installation of a seawall or barrier may be necessary. To help with stabilization and filtration applications, geotextiles are often placed underneath the wall to help provide a firm area for stabilization. The two main types of geotextiles include: Woven Geotextiles and Nonwoven Geotextiles.
Breakwater Geotextile Tubes for Widespread Coastal Erosion
Another common choice for coastal erosion control are the breakwater geotextile tubes. These tubes are designed to help stabilize large coastal areas by helping to retain sand and sediment inside the tube. Tan colors are available for a more natural look. These coastal erosion control solutions are perfect for cliff erosion prevention.
Natural Erosion Control Coir Products
We also offer several natural coir fiber products that can help with erosion control. Typical products include coir logs, erosion control mats, and straw blankets. These products are great for environmentally sensitive areas that require biodegradable erosion control solutions. Erosion control solutions like these provide natural support systems for vegetation to take root, resulting in natural, recurring coastal erosion control.
