What Type of Oil Containment Boom
Would Work on a Bay?
Question on oil boom for bay: I need to know what type of oil containment boom you have for working on a bay. It will be installed in open water environment, at the effluent point of an oil refinery. Also, could you tell me what material is used to create the ballast. I am concerned about the galvanized chain ballast because these effluents sometimes carry acids.
Answer:
Hi! Thanks for your inquiry. I would be happy to help. Since you have mentioned that you are specifically looking for something that can be used in an open water setting, the best containment boom for floating oil on a water body in your specific application would be the open water oil boom.
These open water oil containment booms are designed for use in locations like oceans, bays and other open water area. Their high buoyancy makes them well suited for harbors and open water.
Our Oil Spill Containment Boom meets OPA-90 requirements for all open water applications. We have two models available in 50' or 100' sections:
- 36"/910 mm (height), 12"/300 mm (freeboard), 24"/610 mm (draft)
- 42"/1,060 mm (height), 15"/380 mm (freeboard), 27"/680 mm (draft)
Regarding the ballast, we can use stainless steel chain or stainless steel rod if you prefer. You could also consider concrete rods, to save on cost. You could make them yourself and we can make pockets at the bottom of the boom for you to insert the rods.
In addition to the oil containment boom shown here, we also offer booms that can be used in different water locations such as calm water or moving waters. Further containment models will also include inflatable booms.
