Dewatering Bag used 430 feet
Under Water to Fix Cistern
Cistern Repair Project
The Problem was to find the right dewatering bags to fix a cistern: In Massachusetts, a cistern tank, which holds drinking water, needs to replace a broken valve. The twist? This cistern is located 430 feet under water and the valve is at the bottom of the tank.
The difficulty in this task is twofold: One, the valve is surrounded with sediment; Two, the contaminated water cannot come in contact with the drinking water supply. So how does the tank get emptied, cleaned, repaired, all of this without contamination of the drinking water source?
Solution:
With our technical sales team, Granite Environmental is prepared for unique project situation like this where technical expertise and knowledge are needed and required. Imagine how challenging and tricky it would have been to finish this project successfully and economically without forseen each step in advance.
The solution required to manufacture Custom Dewatering Bags that were installed surrounding the broken valve to prevent possible contaminated areas.
How Was Drinking Water Contamination Prevented?
Through the installed dewatering system the material around the valves was agitated and pumped into the filter bag. The dewatering bag then filtered the sediment, sand, and silt from the water. These particles were piped to the surface to eliminate contamination of the water column.
Multiple units were utilized on this project and the water supply remained uncontaminated, saving the owner time and money.
To have a process in place for future needs work and project steps were documented to be prepared for similar or the same circumstances when dewatering bags to fix a cistern were needed.
In general dewatering bags and geotextile tubes are used for a variety of dewatering applications, on land or in the water. To minimize breakwater damage geotextile tubes are placed on beaches or coastal areas to prevent or degrease sand erosion and function as a control system.
