Deployment of Debris Booms
Question on deploying a debris boom: I am interested in an 8" debris boom to control trash in my area. How do you recommend I deploy it?
Answer:
Thanks for contacting Granite Environmental. I would be happy to assist you. The deployment of a debris boom can vary depending on your specific location and water conditions in your are. The question of how you are deploying a debris boom can also depend greatly on the intended area you are looking to contain.
Booms have commonly been deployed from both the shore and small work boats. For instance, if you are deploying a boom across a river, booms are often anchored on the shore through the use of pilings or weighted objects and then moved or towed across the river.
Barriers have also been deployed along a shoreline, causing contained debris to gently wash up onto the shore. This makes it easy for departments, public works, and other personnel to clean up the debris.
Booms may also be installed and connected around docks and other areas to contain objects falling form piers or docking locations.
Determining the Right Boom Deployment
Deployment of the boom often depends on your specific location and the type of containment you are trying to accomplish.
- Protection: If your goal is to protect a certain area, such as an intake or river opening, booms are deployed across the flow area to block and prevent objects from coming in.
- Containment: If the goal is contain products to a specific area, booms can be deployed around a specific location to keep objects from further polluting other areas. This method is also used to contain aquatic plants.
Because the containment system usually requires the boom making a specific shape, debris booms are often anchored along the boom with buoys and anchors to keep the barrier in place.
