Coastal Erosion
Coastal Erosion is a natural occurrence on exposed and sheltered coasts alike. Currents, waves, and sea level changes directly affect erosion on the coast. While we as humans can contribute to the problem, we also can do our part to prevent it and restore our shorelines.Erosion Control Products:

Erosion Control:
As we consider erosion control solutions, it becomes difficult to know which one is best. Beach Restoration is simple but expensive and only temporary. It can leave a footprint where the new sand is harvested. Seawalls and jetties create larger waves and disrupts along-coast currents. There are solutions that are more permanent and better for the environment.
Coir is natural coconut fiber and protects the soil while plant roots and shoots colonize and stabilize. Coir comes in mat, block, log, and wattle form and provide a semi-permanent and natural solution for erosion.
Geotextiles are permeable and impermeable engineered fabrics that provide a permanent solution for erosion. When used with soil and rock, they can separate two soil types, filter water, and reinforce the ground. To learn more, visit our woven geo textile and non woven fabric web pages.
Shoreline Erosion Causes:
- Longshore Drift: Sediments are transported along a coast at an angle to the shoreline. This occurs most frequently in the surf zone.
- Attrition: Waves cause loose pieces of rock debris (scree) to collide causing corrasion or abrasion (like sandpaper).
- Corrasion: Waves break on the shore or cliff face, which slowly erodes it.
- Corrosion: The sea's pH levels can directly affect erosion. If the level is below 7.0, erosion is more likely to occur.
- Hydraulic Action: Wave strike a shore or cliff face and compresses air into the cracks. The air then exerts pressure causing splintering and further cracking.
